La Armada de Estados Unidos difundió este martes las primeras imágenes del buque de asalto anfibio USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) navegando en formación junto a su grupo de ataque en aguas del mar Caribe, en el marco de un despliegue ordenado por el presidente Donald Trump para combatir a grupos narcoterroristas como el Cartel de los Soles.
Las fotografías, tomadas el 28 de agosto, muestran al Grupo Anfibio Listo Iwo Jima (IWO ARG) junto a la 22ª Unidad Expedicionaria de Marines (MEU) con capacidad de Operaciones Especiales, en una operación que el Comando Sur de Estados Unidos describe como parte de su misión de cooperación marítima con fuerzas de Centroamérica, Sudamérica y el Caribe.
De acuerdo con el comunicado, la presencia de este despliegue busca fortalecer la unidad, la seguridad y la estabilidad regional, en momentos en que Washington ha reforzado su capacidad naval en la zona para contrarrestar la actividad de grupos narcoterroristas.
El USS Iwo Jima es uno de los buques insignia de la Marina estadounidense para operaciones anfibias, capaz de transportar helicópteros, aviones de despegue vertical y cientos de marines en misiones de asalto, ayuda humanitaria o proyección de fuerza.
